Minnesota is known as a place of diversity, from its seasons to its landscapes and species. The bright colours of late spring and the lack of mosquitoes make it my favourite time to hike. There are many different ways and places to enjoy spring wildflowers in Minnesota. This post is a great resource for your next wildflower adventure!
1. Wildflower Sanctuary at Grand Marais in MN
Near Grand Marais in Minnesota, the Devil’s Tracks Wildflower Sanctuary is located off the Gunflint Trail Scenic Byway. This privately maintained sanctuary features lupines as well as New England Asters and Ironweed. It also has ferns, Columbines, Marsh Marigolds and Ferns. You can walk along the Devil’s Track River. The visit is free.
2. Berry & Bloom Farm in Chatfield, MN
Chatfield, just minutes from Rochester, is home to the famous Berry & Bloom Farm. This little slice of heaven offers a U-pick activity with fields of wildflowers and sunflowers. The farm can also host photo shoots and events (like bouquet-making classes) and has a blueberry patch.
3. Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, Chaska, MN
https://mngardens.horticulture.umn.edu/minnesota-landscape-arboretumIf you are looking for a guaranteed opportunity to enjoy diverse wildflower species, check out the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. You can either cruise the three-mile drive or stroll the beautiful garden grounds. The Arboretum has 600 acres of flowers and fauna. There are also terrace gardens, Dahlia Trails, Fern Walks, Dayton Wildflower Gardens, Rose Gardens, Chinese Gardens, Japanese Gardens, and more.
4. Kaplan’s Woods, Owatonna MN
The Kaplans Woods Parkway is home to over six miles of trails, many of which are located near the Straight River. White Trout Lilies are my favourite wildflower, and I also love the Danity Violets. The park is heavily forested and has several mountain biking routes.
5. Carley State Park, Plainview, MN
Carley State Park has a unique river crossing and is well known for its glacial remnants, views, and wildflowers. The park is especially popular in the spring because of the thousands of Virginia bluebells that bloom every year. Early May is the best time to visit the Wildflower Trail to see the carpets of Virginia Bluebells.
6. Nerstrand Big Woods State Park
Most people think of Hidden Falls when they hear Nerstrand Big Woods State Park. This magical state park is also home to hundreds of wildflowers that cover the forest. Visitors hiking here are always drawn to the Endangered Dwarf Trout Lily. There are also Triliums as well as Jack-in-the-Pulpits, Hepaticas, Ferns, and Marsh Marigolds.
7. Riverbend Nature Center in Faribault, MN
The Riverbend Nature Center has dozens of trails that weave through prairies and forests near the river. Prairie Trail is especially known for the golden wildflowers that bloom in the summer and late spring. Wild animals frequent the Endangered Dwarf Trout Lily and marshlands.
8. Kadunce Wayside, Colvill MN
The Kadunce River Wayside Trail is one of my favourite hikes. It’s a 1.2-mile round trip. The trail begins near Lake Superior and follows the Kadunce River. Wildflowers and waterfalls are found along the trail. It’s a great hike for kids, and it takes us to Paradise Beach, one of our favourite spots on the North Shore of Lake Superior.
9. Blue Mounds State Park in Luverne, MN
Blue Mounds State Park, with its 100-foot Sioux Quartzite Cliffs and bison herds on the prairies, is known for its Blue Mounds State Park. In June, you can see prickly-pear cactus and other plants like Asters, Black Eyed Susans, Sunflowers and Compass Plants. There is also a campground and tepees for rent if you want a truly unique experience.
10. Whitewater State Park is located in Altura, MN
