Wildflower Way in Western Australia
Wildflower Way, the easternmost route in Western Australia’s Wildflower Country, runs from Moora in the south to Dalwallinu in the east. From Mullewa, in the north, to Green Head, Geraldton, in the west. Wildflower Way runs 309 km from Dalwallinu north of Perth to Geraldton on the west coast. It covers 21 sites that are designed to educate tourists. Nine local governments in Western Australia are responsible for the signage and maintenance of these sites. Wildflower Way (and country) gets its name from more than 12,000 native wildflower species that bloom in August and September. They carpet the land with beautiful colours. Sixty per cent of wildflower species can only be found in Western Australia. Wildflower enthusiasts should not miss the annual wildflower bloom that occurs in Western Australia. It is the world’s largest wildflower season.
Local governments in Western Australia, which maintain the trail, provide an online map on which you can easily pick and choose the sites for a self-guided tour.
You can also walk along the trail to get a closer look at the native plants, orchids and colourful wildflower meadows. In a previous article, we discussed the unique wildflower species found in Western Australia. For example, the donkey orchid is found throughout Australia but grows only in granite outcrops in Western Australia. In the Wheatbelt, you can also see the low-growing wreath flower. The Wheatbelt is one of nine Western Australia regions that were converted into agricultural land during colonisation.
Western Australia has several reserves and national parks that are home to endemic animals, including the honey possum, which lives in Lesueur National Park. These parks are also great places to see kangaroos and a variety of bird species.
You can choose from a variety of accommodation options when you tour the Wildflower Way during spring. You can also find a park where you can have a picnic with other travellers, wildflower enthusiasts or wildflower lovers who are on their way. You can drive beyond Wildflower Country to taste wine and see the beaches of Margaret River.
